Regular Dental Examinations
The American Dental Association® recommends regular dental examinations 2-4 times per year. During these visits, one of our family dentists, Dr. Aultman, Dr. Cheng or Dr. Leverton, will examine your teeth thoroughly and recommend digital x-rays as needed to view areas between the teeth and below the gum line. Following your exam, your dentist will advise you of any conditions that require attention and provide recommendations.
Our dentists also examine the oral soft tissues during your dental check-up to look for suspicious areas that might be an early warning sign of oral cancer. Oral cancer is a life-threatening disease; early detection is critical for successful treatment.
Preventive Dentistry
During your routine visits with us, our dental hygienists may perform preventive cleaning procedures to remove plaque deposits and stains from the teeth surfaces. If there are visible signs of decay or infection, we may postpone your cleaning until after these dental problems are treated.
What causes Cavities?
Tooth decay occurs when destructive bacteria (dental plaque) stays in contact with tooth enamel long enough to interact with foods and sugars to form harmful acids, which destroy tooth minerals and enamel. This process creates tiny holes, or cavities, that continue to get bigger and go deeper into the tooth structure as the progression continues.
Prevention of Cavities
Regular brushing and flossing are still the best way to combat tooth decay. By continually removing the bad bacteria from the mouth and keeping the tooth surfaces clean, plaque acids have limited ability to harm tooth enamel.

Periodontal disease is an oral infection that begins in the ‘pockets’ between the teeth and the gums. Signs of periodontal disease include:
- Bleeding gums during brushing
- Bad taste in the mouth
- Inflamed, puffy or red gums
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
Periodontal disease doesn't hurt. Our dentists and hygienists will check the gums and review jaw bone levels on dental x-rays during each preventive cleaning appointment to look for signs of periodontal disease.
It is important to treat periodontal disease early to stop the destructive progress of infection, which can penetrate into the bone and cause teeth to become loose and fall out. Often, periodontal treatment can be completed using a non-surgical approach in the comfort of our Pell City dental office. We may ask a specialist, or periodontist, to provide supportive care in cases of moderate to progressive periodontal disease.
